The region has two international airports. The smaller airport at San Javier is situated on the Mar Menor, and El Altet airport (usually known as Alicante) is just a few kilometres outside of the city of Alicante. A new airport to replace San Javier is currently under construction at Corvera and is expected to be completed in 2008.
